Most TACC research and development projects are collaborations with researchers associated with The University of Texas at Austin, the TeraGrid, or other partner institutions. TACC staff collaborate with computational researchers on projects where their computational expertise can substantially enhance the researcher’s work. TACC staff also collaborate with computer scientists, technologists, and others to develop new advanced computing and scientific visualization tools and techniques. Lastly, TACC partners with various organizations to develop proposals for joint hardware and software acquisitions, an area where TACC has been very successful.

Mike Coffin and Timothy Meckel of the Institute for Geophysics and Reuben Reyes of TACC are visualizing large 3D data sets in an immersive environment to study ocean floor bottoms and earthquake fields in the Macquarie Ridge Complex. The Macquarie Ridge Complex is located between Australia and Antarctica, but the visualization lab allows researchers to safely explore ocean trenches 6.5 kilometers deep, correlate earthquakes with ocean tectonic plates, and view earthquake fields under the ocean floor. Ocean floor bottoms were made into 3D models from multi-beam side-scanning sonar and the earthquake foci were represented as spheres to create an earthquake field that dates from the years 1929 to 2000. |

[Full Size Poster for Download -- 11MB]
Wendy Hodges of the School of Biological Sciences and Reuben Reyes of TACC are using computational and visualization techniques to study the heads of horned lizards. These techniques include image processing, 3D reconstruction of internal and external surfaces, geometric calibrations and corrections, comparative geometry, 3D animations and images, and interactive analysis of very large models in stereo 3D in an immersive environment.
